Gestalt
Gestalt psychology explains the tendency of the human brain to perceive whole forms rather than individual parts. The brain will fill in the missing gaps and make connections in order to create a whole image. For example, lines do not need to be touching for people to read the lines as an image. In the image below these individual lines can be read as a circle and a rectangle.
